Washington County

Washington County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. The county seat is Washington.  Washington County was originally formed on January 18, 1838 as Slaughter County in honor of William B. Slaughter, the secretary of Wisconsin Territory. A short time later it was renamed Washington County, in honor of George Washington

Kalona is a few miles south west of Iowa City, and the Amish farmers in the area maintain their old traditions, while existing with the modern cultures of Iowa and Kalona.  One summer day as I was there I captured these nostalgic images of a culture most of us have never known, but yet which they have continued to "live" for many decades.
